Struggling pitcher Oliver Perez was placed on the 15-day disabled list yesterday by the Mets because of a sudden — and somewhat convenient — injury to his right knee. The move was made retroactive to June 1, and solved a roster problem for New York. Lefthander Jonathon Niese came off the disabled list to start yesterday against Florida, so the Mets needed to open a spot for him . . . Nationals catcher Carlos Maldonado was placed on the 15-day disabled list because of a fractured right thumb . . . The Cardinals signed outfielder Randy Winn, looking to provide depth to their bench. Winn, a switch-hitter with a .285 career average, had been designated for assignment by the Yankees last month.

Freeskier Backstrom dies after fall
Acclaimed freeskier Arne Backstrom died in a fall on a mountain in Peru. He was 29. Backstrom, of Olympic Valley, Calif., was the reigning Freeskiing World Tour champion and a rising star in the ski world. He apparently had been leading some skiers down a mountain Thursday when he fell . . . Still recovering from a head injury he suffered while training for the Olympics, snowboarder Kevin Pearce got a “welcome home’’ party in Norwich, Vt. Pearce was critically injured Dec. 31 in Park City, Utah, when he hit his head on the halfpipe while practicing for the Vancouver Olympics.

Packer investigated for sexual assault
Police in Lake Delton, Wis., said a Green Bay Packer is under investigation for the alleged sexual assault of two women early yesterday. Police have not identified the player and said no one has been arrested . . . Bills rookie left tackle Ed Wang was carted off the field at the end of a voluntary minicamp practice with a left leg injury after colliding with a defender . . . The Bills agreed to terms with sixth-year linebacker Reggie Torbor. Terms of the deal were not available . . . Saints tight end Jeremy Shockey, who sat out Friday’s practice because of back spasms, was back yesterday . . . Greg Paulus, the former Duke point guard who spent last year as Syracuse’s starting quarterback, was invited for a second tryout with the Saints this weekend.

Lagat captures Stockholm Marathon
Kenya’s Joseph Lagat won the Stockholm Marathon in a time of 2 hours 12 minutes 48 seconds. Sweden’s Isabellah Andersson won the women’s race for the third straight time . . . Ryan Briscoe pulled away in the closing laps after briefly losing the lead to Danica Patrick and won the IndyCar Series race at the high-banked, 1 1/2-mile track at Texas. It was the fourth time in five races at Texas that a Roger Penske-owned car drove to Victory Lane. It was the first victory this season for Briscoe, who started on the pole . . . Brad Keselowski raced to his third NASCAR Nationwide Series victory of the year and ninth overall, easily holding off rival Carl Edwards at Nashville Superspeedway . . . James Edward Neal, a former NASCAR driver, has been arrested for the third time in three weeks, this time for investigation of drug possession. The Orange County (Calif.) Sheriff’s Department said Neal was arrested Friday, hours after bailing out of jail on charges of attempting to rape a woman . . . Frenchman Tony Gallopin sprinted to victory in the third stage of the Tour of Luxembourg, while Lance Armstrong remained third overall . . . In WNBA action, Angel McCoughtry and Erika de Souza scored 23 points each and Kelly Miller’s only basket of the game was a go-ahead 3-pointer with 44.4 seconds left in overtime as the Atlanta Dream beat the Mystics, 86-79, in Washington; Shavonte Zellous scored a season-high 23 points to lead the host Indiana Fever to a 78-73 victory over the New York Liberty; and Sylvia Fowles had a career-high 32 points, 13 rebounds, and 4 blocks to lead the host Chicago Sky to their fourth straight win, 95-70, over the Tulsa Shock.
