Stephen Drew’s seventh home run of the season, and his second of the night in a 7-3 win over the Orioles, was easily the strangest.
As he rounded first after shooting a fly deep to right field, he saw the ball bounce off the wall above the grounds crew dugout and figured he could start his home run trot.
Making his leisurely time around the basepaths, Jarrod Saltalamacchia figured the same thing. But the official signal never came.
“Then we started taking off running,” Drew said.
“When I saw it hit, I was like, ‘That’s another home run,’ ” Drew said. “I just knew there was no call. So you just had to keep playing it out.”
