UMass shoots past UConn

Scott Crowder and Shawn Saunders scored early third-period goals yesterday at the Mullins Center in Amherst, sparking No. 15 UMass to a 4-3 victory over UConn.

The Huskies (2-1-1) got a shorthanded goal from Andrew Olson, his second tally of the afternoon, at 9:34 of the third to bring it to 4-3, but could not get the equalizer.

P.J. Fenton had two assists for the Minutemen (1-1-0).

Goals by Will Ortiz and Matt Burto gave UMass a 2-1 lead in the second period after Olson's first-period score had given UConn the early advantage.

Chris Ochoa also scored for the Huskies, tying the score at 2 in the second period.

Holy Cross 6, Providence 4 - Ryan Driscoll scored a pair of power-play goals in the first period and Peter Lorinser also scored twice, including an empty-netter, to help the Crusaders (1-1) top the floundering Friars (0-4) at Schneider Arena in Providence.

Dale Reinholdt scored the winning goal for Holy Cross on the power play at 2:52 of the third period, breaking a 4-4 tie.

Crusaders goalie Ian Dams made 31 saves, while his Providence counterpart, Tyler Sims, struggled, allowing five goals on 19 shots.

Maine 4, Mercyhurst 1 - Bret Tyler opened the scoring at 4:57 of the first period and later added two assists, and Wes Clark had a goal and an assist to lead the Black Bears (2-2) to a two-game sweep of the Lakers (0-4) at Alfond Arena in Orono, Maine.

RPI 1, Sacred Heart 0 - At Troy, N.Y., freshman Tyler Helfrich scored the only goal 1:56 into overtime - the first of his career - and Jordan Alford made 26 saves as the Engineers (3-2) nipped the Pioneers (0-2).

W. Michigan 3, Bentley 1 - Riley Gill stopped 33 shots and Jeff LoVecchio chipped in with a goal and an assist, boosting the Broncos (2-0) over the Falcons (0-4) at Kalamazoo, Mich.

Clarkson 5, St. Lawrence 4 - Chris D'Alvise scored the winning goal on the power play at 1:26 of overtime as the Golden Knights (3-1) rallied from a 3-0 deficit to defeat the Saints (2-2) at Potsdam, N.Y.

Air Force 3, Quinnipiac 1 - Greg Flynn had a goal and an assist and Michael Mayra and Jeff Hajner also scored as the Falcons (2-0) swept the Bobcats (1-2) at Air Force Academy, Colo.

Merrimack 2, Bemidji St. 1 - John Goebel scored a shorthanded goal, Justin Bonitatibus also found the net, and Andrew Brathwaite stopped 28 shots as the Warriors (3-0) held off the host Beavers (2-2).


Niagara 6, Northeastern 4 - Vesla Heikkila and Frances McPhail each scored twice to power the Lady Eagles (1-1-1) past the winless Huskies (0-3-1) at Matthews Arena.

Nikki Petrich had a pair of goals for Northeastern.

UConn 2, Colgate 1 - Dominique Thibault and Amy Hollstein scored in the first period, and Jennie Bellonio made the lead stand up with 28 saves as the Huskies (5-1) fended off the host Red Raiders (0-3-1). Kara Leene scored Colgate's goal.

RPI 3, Maine 1 - Nicole McDonald's unassisted strike early in the second period sent the Engineers (4-1-0) on their way to victory at home.
