Kentucky shows fire, but comes up short

Luc Richard Mbah A Moute scored 18 points despite playing the final 8 1/2 minutes with four fouls, leading No. 5 UCLA to a 73-68 victory over No. 20 Kentucky last night in the semifinals of the EA Sports Maui Invitational at Lahaina, Hawaii.

Mbah A Moute scored 6 of UCLA's last 10 points, ignoring the foul trouble to go inside for the first 4 points, then throwing down a dunk on the break to make it 69-65 with 25 seconds to play.

Kentucky (3-1) got to 71-68 on a layup by Randolph Morris with two seconds to go, but Arron Afflalo, who struggled from the field, made two free throws with 0.6 seconds to go for the final margin.

Afflalo finished with 14 points on 5 for 18 shooting for UCLA (3-0).

Georgia Tech 92, Memphis 85 -- Jeremis Smith and Ra'Sean Dickey, two junior big men on a team known for freshmen stars, dominated the boards in the second half and the No. 19 Yellow Jackets (5-0) overcame a 16-point deficit to beat the No. 12 Tigers (2-1) in the other Maui Invitational semifinal.

Marquette 73, Duke 62 -- Dominic James scored a season-high 25 points and led a late surge to help the No. 13 Golden Eagles beat the No. 9 Blue Devils in the championship game of the CBE Classic at Kansas City, Mo.

With the game tied at 56 and 6:23 to go, James scored 10 points in a span of less than 2 1/2 minutes. He was fouled connecting on a fall-away jumper with 3:57 left, and after he made the free throw Marquette led, 67-58. The Blue Devils could not mount a rally over the final couple of minutes, giving Golden Eagles coach Tom Crean his seventh win in 18 games against teams ranked in the top 10.

Florida 94, Prairie View 33 -- Joakim Noah had 19 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 assists, and was 7 of 7 from the line, leading the top-ranked Gators (5-0) in a rout of the visiting Panthers (1-3).

Wisconsin 64, Delaware St. 52 -- Alando Tucker scored 25 points and Brian Butch added 18 to lead the No. 7 Badgers at Madison, Wis.

Kansas 89, Tennessee St. 54 -- Freshman guard Sherron Collins scored 19 points and Brandon Rush had 14 points and 10 rebounds, leading the 10th-ranked Jayhawks at Lawrence, Kan.

Nevada 83, UC Irvine 64 -- Nick Fazekas had 29 points and 14 rebounds, his fourth double-double in four games, and Marcelus Kemp added 23 points to lead the No. 21 Wolf Pack at Reno.

Michigan St. 66, Vermont 46 -- Drew Neitzel was 7 for 8 from 3-point range and scored 26 points to lift the Spartans (5-1) past the visiting Catamounts.

Vermont (2-3) was led by Joe Trapani with 21 points and by Chris Holm with nine rebounds.

Robert Morris 77, UNH 64 -- A.J. Jackson had 20 points and eight rebounds and Tony Lee 18 points as the host Colonials improved to 3-0 for only the second time in the program's 31-year history. Tyrece Gibbs and Jermaine Anderson each had 13 points for the Wildcats (0-4).

UNH led, 36-34, at halftime, but Robert Morris began the second half on a 13-0 run and never led by fewer than 8 the rest of the way.

Dayton 73, Yale 62 -- Marcus Johnson scored 11 points and had 10 rebounds to lead the host Flyers.

Bentley 78, Southern Conn. 61 -- Junior Nate Fritsch scored 19 points and senior Danny Lawson added 17 off the bench as the Falcons, ranked 20th in Division 2, improved to 4-0 at Waltham.

St. Michael's 78, UMass-Lowell 75 -- Brendan Mullins hit 4 of 5 3-pointers and, along with teammate Chris Cayole, scored a game-high 22 points as St. Michael's built a 15-point halftime lead and held on at Colchester, Vt.

Vermont 3, UMass 0 -- Torrey Mitchell scored twice in the second period and the Catamounts limited the Minutemen to 15 shots, two in the third period, as No. 14 UMass (6-2-1, 4-2-0 Hockey East) suffered its first home loss of the season.

Joe Fallon had his school-record 13th shutout for Vermont (6-4-1, 4-1-1), which moved into a second-place tie in the league with BC and BU (behind UNH).

UMass-Boston 3, Wentworth 3 -- Drew LaCombe's goal at 13:20 of the third period earned the tie for the host Beacons.
