Wright St. holds off Huskies

DaShaun Wood scored 23 points and Jordan Pleiman added 13 points and 10 rebounds as host Wright State held off Northeastern, 72-65, in men's basketball action last night in Dayton, Ohio.

After a conventional 3-point play by Northeastern guard Jose Juan Barea cut the Wright State lead to 46-45 with 13:03 remaining, the Raiders rattled off 9 straight points in the next 5:01 to make it 55-45. The Huskies never got closer than 6 the rest of the way.

Barea led Northeastern (6-3) with 20 points, but made just 6 of 20 shots, including 1 of 9 from 3-point range. Bobby Kelly added 12 points for the Huskies. Drew Burleson chipped in with 14 for Wright State (4-5).

Houston 67, Rhode Island 41 -- Oliver Lafayette scored 18 points and the Cougars held the Rams to 15 first-half points in Houston.

Lafayette also had three steals as the Cougars (6-3) scored 32 points off 26 Rhode Island turnovers and never trailed, leading by as many as 33. Rhode Island (6-4) guard Dawan Robinson had 12 turnovers.

Providence 80, San Diego St. 65 -- Jonathan Kale and Geoff McDermott each had double-doubles to help the host Friars defeat the Aztecs.

McDermott contributed 15 points and a game-high 13 rebounds while Kale added 15 points and 12 rebounds for Providence (6-4).

Brandon Heath led the Aztecs (6-5) with 22 points.

Memphis 83, Gonzaga 72 -- Darius Washington scored 22 points and had 10 assists to help the fourth-ranked Tigers hold off the No. 8 Zags.

Memphis (10-1) continued its best start since 1985-86, winning its seventh straight game.

Adam Morrison, the nation's top scorer, did his best to try and lead Gonzaga (9-3), scoring 34 points.

Nevada 56, Norfolk State 46 -- Marcelus Kemp scored 8 of his game-high 15 points during a key stretch in the second half to help the 20th-ranked Wolf Pack (9-1) overcome Norfolk State (2-9).

George Mason 71, Holy Cross 38 -- Lamar Butler broke George Mason's career 3-point shooting record in a 26-point performance to lead the Patriots over the Crusaders in Fairfax, Va. Tony Skinn added 21 points for the Patriots (7-3). Torey Thomas led the Crusaders (5-7) with 16 points.


Cornell 3, Northeastern 0 -- Goalie David McKee faced just 13 shots in recording the shutout as the Big Red (9-3-1) stretched its unbeaten streak to six games with a victory over the Huskies (1-10-4) in the Florida College Classic in Estero, Fla. Northeastern failed to capitalize on nine power plays.

Minnesota-Duluth 4, Maine 1 -- Michael Gergen scored a pair of goals as the Bulldogs (7-10-3) topped the Black Bears (11-5-0) in the Florida College Classic.
