Green's D steals one from Raiders

Charlie Rittgers passed for a touchdown while Dartmouth's defense registered a safety and created four turnovers, including a touchdown on a 29-yard fumble recovery, in a 26-21 season-opening win yesterday over Colgate at Hanover, N.H.

Ben Evans gave Colgate (1-2) the lead with seven seconds gone in the second quarter, capping a 75-yard drive with a 2-yard plunge.

Dartmouth stormed back as Josh Dooley scooped up a fumble by Lee Sloan in the Raiders' backfield and returned it 29 yards for a tying touchdown with 12:15 left in the half. Sixty-four seconds later, after an interception by Steve Jensen, who returned it to the Colgate 3, Rittgers passed to Mark Brogna for the go-ahead score.

Princeton 23, Lafayette 21 -- At Easton, Pa., the Tigers got three field goals from Derek Javarone and a dominating defensive effort that produced a touchdown.

Jay McCareins returned an interception 75 yards for a score and Javarone connected on a pair of kicks in the first half, including a 25-yarder with four seconds left that gave Princeton (1-0) a 20-0 halftime lead.

San Diego 17, Yale 14 -- Hutch Parker kicked three field goals in four attempts and the host Toreros (3-0) outscored the Bulldogs, 14-0, in the second half.

Freshman running back Mike McLeod had with 102 yards on 18 carries and one touchdown for Yale (0-1).

Penn 41, Duquesne 14 -- Pat McDermott threw three touchdown passes and ran for another score, and Michael Johns returned a 29-yard interception for a TD to spark the Quakers in their season opener.

Brown 34, Georgetown 3 -- John Hartigan ran for 91 yards and two touchdowns to power the Bears (1-0) in Washington.

Cornell 24, Bucknell 7 -- Quarterback Ryan Kuhn rushed for 151 yards and two touchdowns, leading the Big Red at Ithaca, N.Y.

Columbia 23, Fordham 17 -- Prospe Nwokocha raced 94 yards with a kickoff return and Jon Rocholl added field goals of 41 and 21 yards as the Lions (1-0) scored 13 unanswered points to overtake the host Rams (0-3).
