Spurs stop Lakers

With so much attention focused on the Lakers, Kings, and Timberwolves, it's easy to forget the San Antonio Spurs are the reigning NBA champions.

The Spurs served a reminder yesterday in Los Angeles.

Tony Parker had 29 points and the Spurs beat the Lakers, 95-89, for their sixth straight win, moving them within 1 1/2 games of the Western Conference lead.

Tim Duncan added 18 points, 13 rebounds, and 6 assists and Bruce Bowen and Manu Ginobili scored 12 points each for the Spurs (52-25), who have won eight of nine.

The Lakers' 11-game winning streak was snapped and they dropped into third place in the West -- a half-game behind the Sacramento Kings and Minnesota Timberwolves.

Timberwolves 90, Grizzlies 82 -- Sam Cassell scored a season-high 36 points and Kevin Garnett had 14 points and 22 rebounds, helping host Minnesota earn its fifth straight win while ending Memphis's seven-game winning streak.

Pistons 79, Pacers 61 -- Richard Hamilton scored 24 points and host Detroit held Indiana to a season low for points and 34.2 percent shooting in a matchup of the top two teams in the Eastern Conference.

Jazz 97, Clippers 92 -- Andrei Kirilenko scored 18 points as visiting Utah handed Los Angeles its 11th straight loss and tied Denver for the final Western Conference playoff berth.

Kings 99, Rockets 94 -- Peja Stojakovic had 28 points and Chris Webber added 19 to lead visiting Sacramento past Houston.

Bucks 90, Raptors 83 -- Brian Skinner had 19 points and a season-high 14 rebounds and visiting Milwaukee clinched a playoff spot.

Nets 106, Hawks 89 -- Richard Jefferson had 20 points and a career-high 12 assists as host New Jersey won its third straight game.

SuperSonics 96, Hornets 88 -- Ray Allen scored 25 points and the SuperSonics snapped a four-game losing streak by beating visiting New Orleans.. . .
In a late game Saturday night in Portland, P.J. Brown scored a season-high 24 points to lead New Orleans to a 94-81 win over the Trail Blazers.
