Jason Varitek may be close to coming back to the Red Sox. But what role the longtime captain will fill is still unknown.
Varitek said Tuesday night he expects to formalize an agreement with the Red Sox soon.
“I will be involved in some way,” he said.
“We’re just putting the finishing touches on something and we’ll have it finalized soon.”
Varitek hasn’t strayed far from the Red Sox since retiring before the current season. He was honored by the team during the summer in a ceremony at Fenway.
Red Sox chief operating officer Sam Kennedy told Fox 25 on Wednesday that general manager Ben Cherington wants Varitek involved with the club. But he indicated speculation that Varitek could replace Bobby Valentine as manager is off base.
“I think he’ll be a great manager someday,” Kennedy said. “But I think he’ll be the first to tell you he’s got a lot to learn.”
ESPN reported that Varitek is likely to serve as a special assistant to Cherington.
