WASHINGTON—Vice President Joe Biden is planning to travel to Boston next week to attend a ceremony on April 15, the anniversary of the Boston Marathon bombings, honoring victims, survivors, and first responders.
A Biden aide confirmed that the vice president would be attending the service with his wife, Dr. Jill Biden. The announcement comes several days after Boston Mayor Martin Walsh formally invited Biden to attend.
“As Marathon Day approaches and we prepare to finish the race, we ask you to provide remarks at the Memorial Service as we mark the one year anniversary of the bombing and pay tribute to the victims, families, and first responders,” Walsh wrote in his letter. “…It is my sincere hope you can join us in Boston.”
He said 3,000 were expected for the event, which is being held in the Grand Ballroom of the Hynes Convention Center, just yards from the marathon finish line.
