Fundraiser for President Obama, Robert Barber, named US ambassador to Iceland

WASHINGTON—President Obama nominated Robert Barber, a Boston attorney and top Obama fundraiser, as ambassador to Iceland Tuesday evening.

Barber headed Obama’s New England fundraising team for his 2012 re-election campaign, bundling $1.68 million for the president in the last election cycle and a total of nearly $3 million since 2007, according to the New York Times fundraising analysis.

Barber, a partner at the Looney & Grossman law firm, joins a long line of top campaign fundraisers who have been rewarded with diplomatic posts by presidents of both parties.

Barber took over as chairman of Obama’s New England Steering Committee in 2009 after Alan Solomont, a prominent Democratic fundraiser, was named ambassador to Spain. Solomont, who returned to Boston in August, will host a fundraiser for Obama at his Weston home Wednesday evening following his health care speech at Faneuil Hall.
