Rubio to Gomez’s aid, Markey to raise money in Beverly Hills

Florida Republican Senator Marco Rubio on Tuesday asked political supporters to donate to Senate nominee Gabriel E. Gomez’s campaign, pitching the Massachusetts Republican as a way to help the GOP take back the Senate.

In an email, Rubio encouraged $15 contributions that he said would “see to it that Gabriel Gomez is the first victory on our drive to a GOP Senate majority.”

Rubio, popular in the national GOP and considered a front-line 2016 presidential prospect, adds star wattage to Gomez’s campaign, which until recent days had not drawn heavy support from outside Massachusetts.

From his Reclaim America political action committee, Rubio wrote that Gomez had “fought within inches of a major political upset that could have national implications.”

“Gomez is currently facing a massive onslaught of Democratic special interest money,” Rubio said. “Everyone from President Obama to Harry Reid to a host of Hollywood liberals have pitched in to help defeat Gomez. Now it’s time to come to his aid.”

After Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell sent out his own email soliciting support for the Bay State nominee, Gomez on Monday worked to distinguish himself from the national party, saying he would be a new breed of Republican who could help moderate the party.

Meanwhile, Democratic Representative Edward J. Markey, tapping further into the deep reserve of Democratic money in southern California, will attend a campaign fundraiser on Sunday at the Beverly Hills home of entertainment mogul Haim Saban and his wife, Cheryl.

A Markey spokeswoman confirmed Markey would attend the event, but had no details on how much money it was expected to bring in.

Markey has had strong support from the Democratic establishment and its fundraising base. Last week, Michelle Obama headlined a high-dollar fundraiser for Markey in Boston that brought in more than $700,000.

The news of Markey’s attendance at the Saban fundraiser was earlier reported by Variety.
