Scott Brown stresses political independence in first TV ad of reelection campaign

Senator Scott Brown today is starting to air the first television ad of his reelection campaign, and it focuses on a theme the Republican pounded across the state last week: his political independence.

In the 30-second spot, which will air in the Boston, Springfield, Providence, R.I., and Albany, N.Y., markets, features clips from his 2010 victory speech, a “60 Minutes” report about him, and Brown addressing students about his up-by-the-bootstraps life.

“We have more work to do on getting this economy moving again,” Brown says. “Working together, we can restore the American Dream for all of us.”

The ad comes after his likely Democratic rival, Elizabeth Warren, has accelerated her own TV campaign. She released a spot last week featuring a testimonial from President Obama.

It also pivots off a Congressional Quarterly study in which the senator takes great pride.

It found that he had voted with his Republican Party just 54 percent of the time last year, supporting his argument that he has been the bipartisan senator he vowed to be after replacing the late Senator Edward M. Kennedy, a Democrat.

But the ad also comes a day after Democrats criticized the senator for siding with his fellow Republicans to block a Democratic plan to prevent a doubling of student loan interest rates.

Brown focused on political independence and bipartisanship during a series of official and campaign appearances during last week’s Senate recess period.
