A changing education systemThe year 2010 brought some major changes to the state's education system.
In January, Governor Patrick signed a sweeping education bill designed to greatly increase the number of charter schools, grant superintendents more power to overhaul failing districts, and make the state eligible for up to $250 million in federal stimulus money.
In July, the state's Board of Elementary and Secondary Education approved the use of national academic standards to replace state guidelines, which include the MCAS tests.
