Recent Massachusetts Senate elections

Massachusetts has had five US Senate elections in the last seven years, more than any other state.

Year   Results
2012 Democrat Elizabeth Warren polled strongly in heavily Democratic greater Boston, and in cities statewide, to defeat incumbent Republican Scott Brown 54 to 46 percent. Warren won back some traditionally Democratic cities and towns that had voted for Brown in 2010, among them Lowell, Quincy, and Fitchburg, but Brown still won more communities overall, 203-148.
2010 Scott Brown became the first Republican to win a US Senate seate in Massachusetts in more than 40 years, edging Democrat Martha Coakley in a special election for the seat of the late Sen. Edward M. Kennedy. The popular vote was fairly close, 52 to 47 percent, but Brown won 230 towns, almost twice as many as Coakley.
2008 Democratic incumbent John Kerry won every community in the state except the North Shore town of Boxford in defeating Republican Jeffrey Beatty 66 to 31 percent. Libertarian Robert Underwood received 3 percent.
2006 Incumbent Edward M. Kennedy, a Democrat, won his last election by a better than 2-to-1 margin over Republican Kenneth Chase. Kennedy won 69 percent of the vote, and 348 of the state's 351 communities. Only Boxford and the Hampden County towns of Granville and Tolland voted Republican.
