The treasurer's seat is open this year, with incumbent Timothy P. Cahill running for governor as an independent. Steven Grossman, a former chairman of the Democratic National Committee and a business owner from Newton, won the Democratic primary and will face Republican candidate Karyn E. Polito, a state representative from Shrewsbury. The treasurer serves for four years.
