Theresa Vail, 22, who is a senior at Kansas State University and a sergeant in Army National Guard, has a tattoo of the Serenity Prayer on her right side, and another tattoo of the US Army Dental Corps insignia on her shoulder.

Both were revealed during the preliminary swimsuit competition.

Vail said in a People interview that she chose not to cover up or hide her tattoos because they support her pageant platform of empowering women.

The 2013 Miss America pageant airs Sunday, Sept. 15 at 9 p.m. on ABC.
