After two weeks of steady clashes between protesters and police in Istanbul, a pianist was a welcome sight and sound in Taksim Square.

German musician Davide Martello rolled his grand piano to the center of the square and played tunes for the next 12 hours. People put aside their displeasure with the government for a period of time to listen to Martello's music and take pictures.

Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Friday urged the protesters to leave Gezi Park near where Martello played, and at the same time encouraged his supporters to rally in Ankara and Istanbul this weekend. The protests spawned from a dispute over a development project, but evolved into a larger outcry over what was deemed Erdogan's authoritarian style.
