Lil Wayne has responded to outrage over a video clip showing him trampling over an American flag. In a tweet today, the rapper said he didn't mean to step on the flag.

The rapper, who also issued a statement via Facebook, was filming a new music video for his song called "God Bless Amerika" when the flag incident occurred. This isn't the first time he has been embroiled in controversy either. Recently, PepsiCo ended a commercial relationship with Wayne over vulgar lyrics in a song that referenced civil rights figure Emmett Till. The latest controversy sparked many strong reactions across the interwebs with many calling it disrespectful. His statement in part reads:

It was never my intention to desecrate the flag of the United States of America. I was shooting a video for a song off my album entitled "God Bless Amerika". The clip that surfaced on the Internet was a camera trick clip that revealed that behind the American Flag was the Hoods of America. In the final edit of the video you will see the flag fall to reveal what is behind it but will never see it on the ground.

Read the full statement.
