Blake Shelton's "Healing the Heartland" concert aired live on Wednesday to raise money for victims of the tornado that swept through Oklahoma on May 20. The benefit showcased musical talents from Usher to Shelton's wife, Miranda Lambert.
Onstage in Oklahoma City's Chesapeake Arena, Lambert dedicated her song "The House That Built Me" to the animals affected by the natural disaster and as she sang, photos from the aftermath of the tornado screened behind her. Well into the song, the emotion of the evening moved Lambert to tears and she took the microphone away from her face, encouraging concert-goers to sing the words as she regained her composure.
Lambert managed to finish the song to a round of applause and mouthed apologies as the tune winded down.
"Healing the Heartland" is one of many benefit concerts for tragedies that have swept the nation this year. Tonight, dozens of singers will take the stage for the Boston Strong concert at TD Garden, which will benefit victims of the Boston Marathon bombings. Lambert is not scheduled to sing at the Boston Strong concert.
Tickets for "Healing the Heartland" reportedly sold out in five minutes, and television viewers were prompted with ways to make donations, via text or phone call, to the United Way of Central Oklahoma, which will disburse the funding to those affected.
