US Senator John Kerry of Massachusetts is a possible candidate to lead the Department of Defense, according to an online story on The Washington Post.

"Although Kerry is thought to covet the job of secretary of state, senior administration officials familiar with transition planning said that nomination will almost certainly go to Susan E. Rice, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations," the Post story reported Monday night.

Kerry is the chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee in the Senate.
