If the world ends tomorrow, as some have predicted, could it come in the form of the living dead?

Well, for those of you who have long been planning your zombie apocalypse survival strategies, Saturday, May 21 could be the day that you finally get to put them to use.

And if you don't have a plan to battle the hoards of undead, the website for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has you covered.

The CDC released a list of must-have survival items should the dead come back to life, including:

  • Water (1 gallon per person per day)
  • Food (stock up on non-perishable items that you eat regularly)
  • Medications (this includes prescription and non-prescription meds)
  • Tools and Supplies (utility knife, duct tape, battery powered radio, etc.)
  • Sanitation and Hygiene (household bleach, soap, towels, etc.)
  • Clothing and Bedding (a change of clothes for each family member and blankets)
  • Important documents (copies of your driver's license, passport, and birth certificate to name a few)
  • First Aid supplies (although you’re a goner if a zombie bites you, you can use these supplies to treat basic cuts and lacerations that you might get during a tornado or hurricane)

The CDC has even gone so far as to create a bunch of handy-dandy zombie-related widgets, such as the one below, that you can plop onto your website.

Get A Kit, Make A Plan, Be Prepared.

While the CDC's zombie survival tips are handy - in fact, the emergency items they list are useful in more than just a zombie apocalypse - they do not go into the zombie-battling and long-term survival strategies that author Max Brooks mapped out in his 2003 book, The Zombie Survival Guide.

So, if you are in fact preparing for the onslaught of ghouls, you may want to delve deeper into Brooks' 10 lessons for surviving a zombie attack:

1. Organize before they rise!
2. They feel no fear, why should you?
3. Use your head: cut off theirs.
4. Blades don’t need reloading.
5. Ideal protection = tight clothes, short hair.
6. Get up the staircase, then destroy it.
7. Get out of the car, get onto the bike.
8. Keep moving, keep low, keep quiet, keep alert!
9. No place is safe, only safer.
10. The zombie may be gone, but the threat lives on.
