"Star Trek" (the original series) ran for only three seasons (1966-1969) but has lived on for parts of five decades through syndication and video releases, as well as spin-off series and a long-running motion picture franchise.

Through it all, arguably the most famous character to emerge from the "Star Trek" brand (with apologies to Mr. Spock), is Captain James Tiberius Kirk, portrayed of course by William Shatner. Mr. Shatner today celebrates his 80th birthday.

Throughout a 60-year career, Shatner starred in the '80s cop show "T.J. Hooker," more recently as Denny Crane in "The Practice," and currently in the CBS comedy "$#*! My Dad Says," but his resume is so lengthy that it's easier to look at it on a site like the Internet Move Database (IMDB).

In honor of Mr. Shatner's birthday, we offer (above) for your viewing and listening pleasure, his surreal 1978 performance of Elton John's hit "Rocket Man."
