Yesterday marked James “Whitey’’ Bulger’s 16th anniversary as a fugitive. But the interest in Bulger and his notable brother, William M. "Billy" Bulger, extends well beyond the Boston area.

Billy Bulger served for many years as president of the Massachusetts Senate and later as president of the University of Massachusetts from 1996 until 2003. "Whitey" Bulger, on the other hand, was charged with murder in 19 slayings in the 1970s and 1980s. After he fled, it was revealed in court that "Whitey" Bulger served a a long-time informant for the FBI and was tipped off to his pending racketeering indictment by his FBI handler, John J. Connolly, Jr.

Jeff Fager, the current executive producer for the CBS news show "60 Minutes", had worked as the producer on a 1992 profile of William Bulger and his relationship with his notorious gangster brother "Whitey". He reflected on the "60 Minutes" story last month, saying that it was among his favorite works to produce.
