Middle East protests spread after Libya attack
On Sept. 11, US Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens and three other Americans were killed at the US consulate in Benghazi, Libya, possibly by protesters angered by a film that ridiculed Islam's Prophet Muhammad. There were also reports of a planned attack on the consulate staff.
Egyptian troops used military vehicles and tear gas to briefly disperse crowds of protesters gathered outside the US Embassy in Cairo on Sept. 14.
