In 1999, Michael E. Capuano succeeded another Kennedy, Joe, in winning election to the Massachusetts Eighth Congressional District seat. A lifelong resident of Somerville, Capuano also served as mayor of that city from 1990 to 1998. Capuano obtained nomination papers and said he would make an announcement next week.
Strengths: Experience in Congress, serving on the House Democratic Leadership team as a member of the Democratic Steering and Policy Committee.
Weaknesses: In Massachusetts, Capuano isn't as much of a household name as some other potential successors.
