The attorney general of Massachusetts since 2006, Martha Coakley has officially announced her candidacy for the US Senate. Before her election as attorney general, Coakley served eight years as Middlesex district attorney.
Strengths: Coakley's experience as attorney general will be an asset. On her website, she points to being honored by groups like Mothers Against Drunk Driving and the Victim Rights Law Center. Expect her to campaign on her record as a citizen advocate.
Weaknesses: Coakley could have a name recognition problem if any of her Democratic primary opponents are named Kennedy.
