Barros endorsed by Chinese liberal organization

A political advocacy organization in Chinatown and the South End endorsed mayoral candidate John F. Barros on Wednesday, lauding his work stabilizing working class neighborhoods and communities of color through the creation of affordable housing and the revitalization of blighted land.

The Chinese Progressive Political Action is a member organization affiliated with the nonprofit Right to the City, which through its electoral arm endorsed Barros last week.

According to a statement released by the organization, it, along with citywide partners, drafted “a platform centered on the call to remain in, reclaim, and rebuild the city.”

More than 2,000 units of high-end housing have been approved by the city for Chinatown and the surrounding area in the last 13 years, and more is in the pipeline, the statement said. Rising rents and the sale of row houses, which were an inexpensive housing stock, are displacing immigrant families, the organization said.

Barros, through his work with the Dudley Street Neighborhood Initiative, provides “an inspiring example of a community that was able to stabilize its residential core through establishing permanently affordable housing and exercising community control of development,” the statement said.

“We need a mayor who will make community stabilization policies the top priority of city government,” community organizer Karen Chen said in the release.
