Charter school compromise sought on Beacon Hill

State Senator Sonia Chang-Diaz, a Boston Democrat who cochairs the Joint Education Committee, has decided to support the opening of more charter schools in Boston and other cities.

However, Chang-Diaz said her support is contingent on the Legislature agreeing to completely fund the current tuition reimbursements to municipalities for students who enroll in charter schools, her office announced Saturday.

In the past two years, the Legislature has not completely funded charter school tuition reimbursements. Those reimbursements do not cover the entire amount of money communities lose when a resident goes to a charter school.

If the Legislature fails again to provide complete tuition reimbursement, then the increase in charter schools would stop for that year, under a compromise bill Chang-Diaz negotiated with Representative Russell Holmes.
