In 2010, Brown became the first Republican elected to the US Senate from Massachusetts since 1972 when he won the special election to succeed the late Senator Edward M. Kennedy, who held the seat for 47 years. 1. He’s been a member of the National Guard for 30 years.
On Aug. 1, 2012, Brown was promoted to colonel in a private ceremony presided over by Senator John McCain of Arizona. Next
2. He’s got game.
During an appearance on Jay Leno, Brown said his ability to make it rain threes earned him the nickname “Downtown Scotty Brown,” not exactly in so many words. Brown also confessed in his senior yearbook to a “secret ambition to play for the Jazz or Celtics.” Next
3. He did start the fire.
According to The Washington Post, he once set the woods on fire near his home, a blaze that took firefighters an hour to extinguish. He is pictured, at left, buying a fire starter at Harvey’s Hardware in Needham. Next
