WASHINGTON -- The Senate yesterday confirmed Samuel A. Alito Jr. to become the 110th justice of the Supreme Court, sending a veteran federal appeals judge who is the son of an Italian immigrant to the high court to replace the nation's first female justice, Sandra Day O'Connor.
