WASHINGTON -- Confident that the Senate will confirm Judge Samuel A. Alito Jr. as the next Supreme Court justice after his smooth hearing last week, conservative judicial activists say that Republicans no longer need to nominate ''stealth" Supreme Court nominees whose views on abortion rights are unknown.
