From afar, lower Manhattan seemed cloaked in a dark, foreboding cloud. Hundreds of people fleeing the explosion scene were covered in ghostly white ash, many with blood pouring from wounds.
Pictured: Marcy Borders was covered in dust as she took refuge in an office building in the aftermath of the World Trade Center attacks. Borders had been caught outside on the street as a cloud of smoke and dust enveloped the area after the towers collapsed.
