Sergeant Michael J. Kelley, 26, Scituate
On June 8, 2005, just two months into a tour of duty in Afghanistan, Kelley became the Massachusetts National Guard's first combat-related fatality in the war on terrorism. He was struck by rocket fire as he unloaded a helicopter on his base. He joined the military shortly after graduating from Scituate High in 1997. Friends described him as quiet but funny and quick-witted. He was known in the Guard for drawing funny cartoons. He was posthumously promoted from specialist to sergeant.
