Shock jock casualties
Dennis and Callahan
On Sept. 29, 2003, WEEI's Gerry Callahan, right, and John Dennis made racially insensitive remarks in talking about Joe the Gorilla, an animal that had escaped from the Franklin Park Zoo and injured a person before being captured near a bus stop. Dennis and Callahan compared the animal to a school child who was being bused from the city to the suburbs through Metco, an effort to improve education of inner-city students as well as the diversity of suburban schools. The remark prompted one advertiser to drop the program and another to stop using the personalities for on-air pitches. The two were suspended and sent to racial sensitivity classes before returning to the airwaves.
