Wildfire evacuees look to go home BASTROP - Fire crews made progress yesterday fighting a massive wildfire in the central part of the state but concerns over still-smoldering hot spots kept thousands of residents from returning home. The tension was evident at a news conference as some residents shouted questions at county officials, demanding to know when they could return to their homes in the Bastrop area, about 30 miles east of Austin. Officials said they did not know how long it would take to get residents back. Nearly 190 wildfires erupted in the state over the last week, killing four people, destroying more than 1,700 homes and forcing thousands to flee. (AP)

Hispanic group ends Ariz. boycott PHOENIX - One of the nation’s most prominent Hispanic groups has called off a boycott of Arizona it organized in May 2010 over the enactment of a controversial immigration law. The National Council of La Raza said the boycott had served its purposed by discouraging other states from enacting similar laws. (AP)

Fort Bragg searches for missing ammo FAYETTEVILLE - An investigation is underway into the disappearance of nearly 14,000 rounds of ammunition at Fort Bragg, officials said. Army Staff Sergeant Joshua Ford, a spokesman for the 82d Airborne Division, said the ammunition disappeared from the First Brigade Combat Team at the base; investigators think it was taken overnight Tuesday. Police raid store, ending standoff OAKLAND - Police stormed an Office Depot store in Emeryville early yesterday and ended a six-hour standoff by arresting the gunman inside. Authorities said the man, who was not immediately identified, was the only person in the building and was not injured.
