Navy commander rebuked for actions

VIRGINIA BEACH - The secretary of the Navy has censured the former commander of a fighter squadron at Oceana Naval Air Station. Navy Secretary Ray Mabus said Commander Liam Bruen permitted a hostile work environment, and allowed subordinates to sexually harass a junior officer, and gave the officer a bad performance evaluation as reprisal for filing a complaint. The Virginian-Pilot reported yesterday that Bruen was head of Strike Fighter Squadron 186 in August 2009 when an informal meeting was held to choose call signs for new officers. Ensign Steve Crowston was given one of three signals that were proposed, all of which had antigay overtones. Mabus said in a letter that Bruen “demonstrated a profound lack of judgment.’’

Gunman kills five at roller rink party GRAND PRAIRIE - A gunman opened fire at a North Texas roller rink during a private birthday party, fatally shooting at least five people and wounding three others last night. The shooting happened just after 7 after an argument apparently got out of hand. A police spokesman said the gunman was one of the attendees and was shot, but he was not sure whether it was a self-inflicted wound. top stories on Twitter
