Senator John Kerry urged President Obama yesterday to grant temporary protected status to Guatemalans in the United States, saying recent natural disasters in their homeland have made it unsafe for them to return.

The impoverished Central American nation recently suffered a volcanic eruption and tropical storm that killed at least 174 people.

“They should not be forced to return to a ravaged homeland where their most basic human needs cannot be met,’’ Kerry wrote to Obama.

Haitian immigrants received temporary protected status, which allows them to remain in the United States for a fixed period of time as their country recovers, after a devastating earthquake in January.
