MONTPELIER, Vt.—Ben & Jerry's Homemade co-founder Jerry Greenfield says that the company is not a person.

That remark came at a news conference called to support amending the U.S. Constitution to overturn the corporate personhood outlined in a U.S. Supreme Court decision two years ago this week.

Greenfield joined other activists and lawmakers on Wednesday in calling for the Legislature to pass a resolution calling for an amendment.

That 5-4-ruling found that corporations have the same rights as individuals to make unlimited contributions to independent groups seeking to influence elections. It has been criticized by Vermont's congressional delegation and others on the left as unleashing unlimited corporate influence over elections.

An amendment to the Constitution requires a two-thirds vote in both houses of Congress and ratification by three-quarters of the states.
