HIGHGATE, Vt.—The Royal Canadian Mounted Police says efforts to combat crime in the border area of Quebec just north of Vermont and New York state is showing results.
The RCMP says that in October and November 60 suspected illegal immigrants were arrested along Quebec's border with Vermont.
That compares with about 15 people arrested in the same period of 2009.
RCMP spokesman Luc Thibault says Mounties have been working closely with other law enforcement agencies and the public in the Lacolle area of Quebec just north of the border to combat border crime.
U.S. border officials have said that illegal immigrants in the United States sometimes try to enter Canada where they are eligible to apply for refugee status upon arrival.![]()
