BENNINGTON, Vt.—A Bennington manufacturer of tear gas and pepper spray products is facing charges of illegally storing hazardous waste without a permit.

The U.S. Attorney for Vermont said Wednesday that Mace Security International and Mace Bennington Unit President Jon Goodrich have been indicted by a federal grand jury with a felony, alleging that they kept hazardous waste in mill buildings and outside the facility in shipping containers near the Walloomsac River.

Mace and Goodrich also are accused of getting multiple estimates for removing the waste starting in the fall of 2006 but taking no action.

If convicted, Mace and Goodrich each face fines of up to $50,000 for each day the law was violated.

A message left for Goodrich after hours was not immediately returned.
