AUGUSTA, Maine—A retired solar panel from Maine's Unity College may have helped bring solar power back to the White House.
Last month Bill McKibben of Vermont's Middlebury College used the panel as a prop to persuade world leaders to install solar on their homes.
McKibben, founder of the 350.org group, left Washington without a commitment. But now the Obama administration says the White House will be decked out in solar panels after all.
The panels will go atop the White House's living quarters by spring 2011, and will heat water for the first family and supply some electricity. Energy Secretary Steven Chu announced the plans today in Washington.
