BURLINGTON, Vt.—University of Vermont researchers have received about $20.2 million in federal stimulus dollars to fund 54 research projects.

The Burlington Free Press says the UVM College of Medicine has received $12.4 million to carry out 38 of those projects. And school officials say more money is likely.

Medical school Dean Ira Bernstein says the scientific community is entrepreneurial and UVM scientists rose to the occasion to apply for the grants.

One of the projects being funded looks at the effect of nicotine on adolescent brains.

Developmental neurobiologist Rae Nishi says there's that if you get hooked on smoking as an adolescent, it's harder to quit. The study is trying to learn why.
