Newfane man charged with lying about sheriff
BRATTLEBORO, Vt. -- A Newfane man has been charged with making up a story about former Windham County Sheriff Sheila Prue claiming that she and a top deputy had sought protection money from area businesses.
Charles A. Chandler said last year that Prue, who pleaded guilty to embezzlement last June, and Lt. Sherwood Lake had offered him additional security and the dismissal of future vehicle violations if he paid them $1,000 in cash.
The story was fabricated, according to court documents filed by Vermont State Police Detective Cpl. Michael Burns, who investigated the allegations.
Chandler has pleaded not guilty to felony charges of perjury and giving false information to law enforcement.
He faces up to 12 years in prison or $3,000 in fines if convicted on the charges.
