Vermont senator criticizes cuts in food program

US Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont said Tuesday that cuts in a federal emergency hunger program have resulted in a 50 percent reduction in food supplies from that program for the state’s leading distributor of food for the poor. Sanders, who called the situation ‘‘unconscionable,’’ appeared Tuesday with representatives of the Vermont Foodbank and Chittenden Emergency Food Shelf to highlight the issue. ‘‘It is simply unacceptable that in this day and age, Vermont children go to bed hungry,’’ he said. The senator warned that more cuts may be on the way because the House has refused to consider the Senate-passed farm bill.
