PROVIDENCE, R.I.—The outgoing president of Brown University has been named to the board of trustees at Princeton University.

Ruth Simmons will join the board at the Ivy League school in New Jersey effective July 1. Princeton announced six other new trustees on Tuesday.

Simmons is stepping down at the end of the month after serving as Brown's president since 2001. She was the first African-American president of an Ivy League school.

Before joining Brown, Simmons served as president of Smith College in Massachusetts and in various positions at Princeton, including vice provost.

Simmons was elected to a four-year term on the 40-member board at Princeton.

Simmons' successor at Brown, economist Christina Hull Paxson, also comes from Princeton. She has served as dean of the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs.
