PROVIDENCE, R.I.—Mitt Romney has easily won Rhode Island's presidential primary.

Romney earned 63 percent of the vote in Tuesday's Republican contest. Texas U.S. Rep. Ron Paul placed second with 24 percent.

Romney was heavily favored. The presumptive GOP nominee and former governor of neighboring Massachusetts racked up endorsements from several top state Republicans.

Turnout in Tuesday's primary was only 3 percent in this heavily Democratic state. President Barack Obama stood unchallenged on the Democratic ballot and many Republicans saw Romney's victory as a foregone conclusion.

Tuesday's presidential primary marked the first statewide test of a new law requiring voters to show IDs at the polls.

Election officials say a rough survey of polling places found that fewer than 25 voters lacked the necessary identification and instead cast provisional ballots.
