RISD students clean up abandoned synagogue
PROVIDENCE, R.I.—Students from the Rhode Island School of Design are using their spring break to clean up an abandoned synagogue in Providence so it can be used by the public again.
RISD's (RIHZ'-deez) "Alternative Spring Break" is a community service project whose focus this year is on creating a usable space at the historic Broad Street building. Project events are taking place all week.
The effort includes improving the synagogue's outdoor area and making it more accessible as well as using art pieces to try to raise awareness among the public about the space.
Students are also planning a community event featuring an arts and crafts fair, a gallery exhibit and a tour of the building.
Donated art works for display are being accepted through Friday.
