PROVIDENCE, R.I.—A former Rhode Island postal worker has admitted to stealing money from greeting cards sent in the mail.

Robert Hart Jr., of Cranston, pleaded guilty on Thursday to stealing money from the mail while working as a postal service employee. Federal prosecutors say he faces up to five years in federal prison when he is sentenced on July 13.

The 49-year-old Hart, who worked at a Providence postal facility, was arrested in October after investigators say he took cash from a greeting card in a sting operation.

At the time of his arrest, authorities said Hart acknowledged stealing $200 from greeting cards.

Defense attorney Mary McElroy says Hart no longer works for the postal service.
