WOONSOCKET, R.I.—A retired Woonsocket municipal court clerk has been charged with embezzling nearly $400,000 from the city.
Mayor Leo Fontaine said in a news release that Rhode Island State Police charged Rachel Arruda on Wednesday. Officials said Arruda stole $389,000 from 2004 until her retirement in August 2010.
The mayor's office said the investigation began after auditors and the city's finance department identified suspicious activity in numerous transactions. Arruda did not immediately return a message on Thursday.
She is the second Woonsocket employee charged with embezzlement this year.
