PROVIDENCE, R.I.—A replica of the Sloop Providence is preparing to set sail for Newport after several months of repairs.

The Providence Journal reports the ship, featured in two of the "Pirates of the Caribbean" movies, is scheduled to be launched Friday in Providence, where the work has been happening. On Saturday, the 110-foot ship is set to sail down Narragansett Bay to Newport, where it will be moored at Bowen's Wharf and open to visitors for free over the weekend.

Thorpe Leeson, who purchased ship in February from the city of Providence, says he's going to use it for charter trips and education.

The Providence was the first warship to sail under America's Continental Navy and was once commanded by John Paul Jones. The replica was built in 1976.
